vIn 2016, researchers using the Atacama Large Millimeter Array (Alma) in Chile were the first to observe the water-snow line around V883 Orionis. They were able to do so because the star is unusual. An increase in its brightness has pushed the snow line out to six billion km (3.7 billion miles) – or the equivalent distance from our Sun to dwarf planet Pluto – making it easier to spot from so far away.
